In 1906 I was barely over 14 years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She said, "You've always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now you're going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?" I didn't understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn't have a choice, any more than I'd had a choice in being born.

I read the reviews and laughed a bit because a few of the reviews I read seemed to be from people who knew this family personally. Since it was only 99 cents, I thought it was book written by someone who threw it together and pawned it off on her neighbors, but it was really a great book. It is told in the first person, in the voice of Maude. It's an honest book and written in plain words, like you would use to talk to your friend over a cup of coffee. It covers 1906 through the late 1960s. I found the time span interesting to see Maude go from using horses for transportation and using an outhouse to finally having her husband work for an automobile plant in Detroit and having indoor plumbing and electricity. The books spans the lives of her children and grandchildren and is very relatable. I read it in just two days. For 99 cents, this is a great bargain.Product details

Maude (Audible Audio Edition) Donna Mabry Shana Gagnon LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews
This story carries the reader from the late 1800's up until the early 1960's and explores and shares every facet of this extraordinary, ordinary life of Maude, the author's grandmother. It's a fascinating story and brings history into focus making the reader aware that these times weren't such a distant past and that through even the greatest heartaches and periods of national insecurity and fear there were moments of joy and happiness...and that love comes in many faces and depths just as honesty does. This book is strife with honesty that some might find difficult to read or accept but that I found totally refreshing and quite believable. I have known women like Maude and my life was also made better for it!! I hope this book reminds each reader of a "Maude" they've been blessed to have in their life and if not here's your chance to enjoy that precious gift for a little while.
This story was so good I couldn't put it down. Each page was more thrilling than the last. I am giving copies for Christmas.
The author has created a book from the life story of her grandmother - Maude. It is a tale that will grab you by the collar, sit you down, and won't let go until you've turned the last page. Life at the turn of the century was difficult at best, especially for girls who were expected to learn all the day-to-day ways of making their man (husband) happy - cooking, cleaning, washing, mending, gardening, milking the cow, cleaning the outhouse, and still find time to welcome him into their waiting arms at night.
Maude's story begins in the early years of the 1900s. We follow her through the happiness of her first marriage at an early age, through her move to a new home far away from family and friends, and on to her love for her grandchildren. The character of Maude is as complex as any other I've met. Her story is compelling. And while I'm sure we all have a family story that is similar in many ways, this one is worth reading. The story is well written and easy to follow. The descriptive passages are detailed but never bog the reader down with too much flowery prose.
You'll find yourself entranced with Maude's family. A perfect book to travel with.
Maude was a great read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading historical biographies. Maude was the author's grandmother who lived in the early 1900's and had very hard life growing up. She experienced loss and heartbreak at an early age. She experienced the loss of her parents and subsequently married at a young age. She again experienced loss and heartache but struggled through it with a baby, and she grew stronger and became more self sufficient. She remarried into a loveless relationship with a man she didn't love and whom she barely knew. And unfortunately, her husband, George felt the same way. The marriage was almost forced on them by the church and the small community where she lived. She and her little girl rode in a horse-drawn wagon to her husband's home on a farm where he lived with his elderly mother who had spoiled George. She was hateful and spiteful toward Maude and made her life miserable until she finally died with a plague that took many in the community. While living on the farm, Maude and George had a number of children. Some of which died at birth or she miscarried, but, she had six that lived. So, Maude led a difficult life, and put up with a husband whom she didn't love and who was quite lazy, because his mother had spoiled him. Most of the time, he did what he pleased, which iincluded drinking and pretending to work, but didn't include helping Maude with anything. Therefore, most of the family responsibility fell on her shoulders. During the Great Depression, the farm failed, so the family was forced to move to Detroit to find work. But, George being a lazy, drunken bum, wouldn't work.
So again, Maude was left with the responsibility of everything, but she found ways to not only survive but to prosper. However, as she got older, that became harder for her to do. Two of her adult children died, one in the war and one in an accident, so her life was filled with loss, hard work, frustration and heartache. It was an interesting story, but a little depressing to read, because this poor woman endured so many unhappy, difficult years, but she never gave up and found ways to go on. Her faith gave her the strength she needed to overcome so much.
And like life is...not perfect. Donna Mabry takes us on a journey through her Grandmother's life, bare and raw and heartwarming. She takes stories her Grandmother told her and fleshes out each character so the reader can feel the love, the pain, the longing and losses. I cried through the book which I could barely put down. If you like a book that stirs your feelings about a person who survives the hardships of life with strength and courage, you will love Donna 's Grandmother, Maude.
